It is rare not to see a line of cars waiting to park in the Union parking lot, and starting Monday these lines will probably become even worse. A portion of the lot will be closed because of repairs to the Union’s roof.
Although the Broadcast Center sent an e-mail on Tuesday, many students are still unaware of the change.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do. I guess I’ll try to get here early,” said history freshman Stephen Buratt as he waited in line for a parking spot.
Union Director Shirley Plakidas said there is a possibility they will move some of the lost spaces to the street during the repairs.
Kim Phan, pre-law sophomore, said she typically waits 30 minutes for a spot in the lot. Though she has a parking pass, she parks there because she cannot find a close spot in the commuter lots.
Wright Kennedy, history freshman, works at the toll booth for the Union parking lot. He said the line is always long, and they are always busy.
“[The roof renovations] will not take up nearly as much space as what will happen in the fall [with the Union renovations], but we will lose a few spaces out of it,” said Plakidas.
While Plakidas said the same contractor is being used for the Union renovations, the roof replacement has nothing to do with the renovations.
Along with the lot closure, the south entrance to the Union, which is by the Life Sciences building, will also be closed. The roof work is scheduled to be completed July 5.
