Political science professor Kevin Mulcahy was arrested and accused of being a peeping Tom early Friday morning.
Kristine Calongne, director of media relations for the Office of Public Affairs, said Mulcahy has been placed on paid administrative leave until an investigation can be conducted by the University.
The victim, a University student, told The Daily Reveille he was walking on Highland Road in the North Gate area when he saw a car driving in his direction. The victim said that after he made eye contact with the driver, the car turned around and followed him to his apartment.
The victim, whose name is being withheld because he fears retribution, said he called the police after the driver got out of his car and approached the apartment.
The Baton Rouge Police Department responded to the call and arrested Mulcahy at 2:48 a.m. After the BRPD issued him a misdemeanor summons, Mulcahy left the scene with a friend.
The victim said he did not understand why the driver followed him home, but he was alarmed after being followed from Highland Road.
The victim said the driver’s car remained in his parking lot Friday until about 9:30 a.m.
Mulcahy referred all comments to his lawyer, Drew Louviere.
Louviere said he has not read the summons, so he can’t comment on the statute of the arrest.
“The investigation of facts will indicate this is a misunderstanding,” he said.
Louviere said his client is not guilty of the peeping Tom charge.
Mulcahy has been at the University for 26 years and teaches several courses in the political science department, including American government topics.
Mulcahy is also the executive editor of the “Journal of Arts Management, Law and Society” and the author of several publications.
