Hundreds of students gathered yesterday afternoon in the Design Building Atrium for a pizza party to kick off the semester.
The party, organized by Dean David Cronrath’s office in the College of Art and Design, offered free pizza and soda to all attendees.
“You can’t beat free pizza,” said Zach Lott, a graphic design freshman who went to the party.
So many students and faculty came to the event that more than 60 pizzas were consumed within half an hour.
Cronrath said the party’s purpose was to allow students of different schools within the college to meet one another. The College of Art and Design is divided into three different schools spread across seven buildings.
“It’s infrequent that we all get together, but there’s a common thing that we share,” Cronrath said.
The party cost about $400, said Jennifer Ebert, administrative coordinator of the college.
The Dean’s Circle, a fund-raising group for the college, covered the party’s cost, Cronrath said. The group is funded by private donations and is dedicated to advancing the college’s purposes.
The idea for the party came from the Student Leadership Group, an organization composed of members and leaders of student organizations within the college.
Travis Moore, landscape architecture senior, described the party as a success. He agreed with the event’s goal of bringing the students together.
“It’s another way to connect,” Moore said.
Kelly Darbonne, interior design sophomore, thought the party was a good idea but said something like a cross-department project would do more to bring students together.
“That would get us to know one another better,” Darbonne said.
