LSU defensive line coach Karl Dunbar will leave the Tigers’ staff for a second coaching stint in the NFL next season.
Dunbar, who was the defensive line coach for the Chicago Bears in 2004, accepted an offer to coach the same position with recently-hired Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress.
“Karl is a great teacher of fundamentals and hand skills, and he’s played the position at the NFL level,” Childress said. “He has experience coaching at the NFL level and all you have to do is watch his players to know exactly what you are going to get.”
LSU coach Les Miles hired Dunbar this past season to help tutor a unit which amassed a total of 31.5 sacks in 2005.
In Minnesota, Dunbar will be reunited with Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams. Williams earned All-Big 12 honors while Dunbar was the defensive line coach at Oklahoma State in 2002, leading to him being selected in the first round of the 2003 draft by the Vikings.
Dunbar played on the defensive line for LSU from 1986 to 1989 and went on to spend four seasons playing in the NFL for the New Orleans Saints and the Arizona Cardinals.
After two years coaching at Nicholls State, Dunbar returned to LSU in 2001 as an assistant strength coach before heading to Oklahoma State to join Miles’ staff in 2002.
