Political strategist and University alumnus James Carville will speak Friday about the importance of political activism to students, faculty and the public in the Manship School of Mass Communication Holliday Forum.
Carville, a political consultant for former President Clinton’s 1992 campaign, will give a 30-minute speech about his political background, civic engagement and the importance of youth political involvement, said Ryan Berni, assistant director of the Student Government department of governmental relations.
Carville’s speech is part of SG’s projectGEAUX. The project, themed “Democracy at Work,” aims to promote student political activism, public service and awareness.
Berni worked as a summer office assistant for Carville’s Washington D.C. office. He said Carville’s personal nature will appeal to the audience.
“He has a fiery attitude. He has common sense, and he makes you laugh,” Berni said. “People relate to him.”
Adrienne Moore, director of the Reilly Center for Media and Public Affairs, said the Manship School is “thrilled” about Carville’s speech.
“Political dialogue is critical for understanding different views and perspectives,” Moore said.
The discussion will be held in the Journalism Building on Friday at 10 a.m. Seating for the free forum is limited, so attendees are encouraged to arrive early.
