After heavy winds Monday at 9:45 a.m., a large white tent that flew into Harrelson Hall was strewn across the Brickyard, but no one was hurt.
The tent, according to Sgt. Jon Barnwell of Campus Police, did not belong to the University. Organizers of the Wellness Fair, he said, had rented it, but after the damage Monday, they called the fair off.
As of Monday afternoon, Barnwell said he did not know the cost of the damage.
“What we had to do was secure the tent to the trees,” he said.
Although the tent was staked to the ground with its metal structure, the winds blew it off and the chairs and tables underneath it.
Police officers cordoned off the entire Brickyard area with tape.
“It’s not like we’re trying to inconvenience people,” Barnwell said. “If the tent blew over, it could kill people.”
He said he would rather Campus Police caution off a larger area and no one get hurt than cautioning off a smaller area and taking the risk.
According to Barnwell, Campus Police wanted to remove the tent before the next set of classes began. A tractor pulled the tent away by 1:30 p.m.
