New women’s basketball coach Van Chancellor said he has four potential candidates to replace assistant coach Carla Berry.
Berry resigned her position April 13 through an lsusports.net news release that said she would depart the coaching profession for private business opportunities.
The first candidate to potentially replace Berry was scheduled to arrive in Baton Rouge on Thursday afternoon.
Chancellor said all candidates are female and currently employed as assistant coaches at other schools.
He said he received permission to interview the candidates from all of their current head coaches.
Chancellor declined to release the names of the potential hires but said he hopes to make a decision within two weeks.
“I don’t want to do anything to jeopardize their current positions,” he said.
Chancellor’s office in the Athletic Administration Building remains mostly bare with empty shelves. He currently searches for a house and has not yet moved most of his belongings.
“I’m just focused on taking care of the players,” Chancellor said.
The team met Thursday afternoon and practiced a variety of drills such as screen-and-roll plays. Chancellor said he’s impressed with the team’s effort during his first two days of practice.
“I’m really excited about this team’s attitude,” he said. “They’re not big-headed at all. They have a great work ethic.”
Senior Associate Athletic Director Herb Vincent told The Daily Reveille on Saturday that Chancellor would decide whom to hire and when the hiring would take place.
