The Student Senate confirmed most of Student Body President Bobby Mills’ cabinet appointments. However, the Senate referred former SBP candidates Kate Luckadoo and Josh Weeks’ appointments to the committee on appointments for further review.
Mills said his cabinet’s job is to be there to help him execute certain duties that he chooses to help improve the student body.
“I set goals for each position in each department,” Mills, a junior in political science, said.
According to Mills, the makeup of his cabinet is extremely important. He said he chose the appointments carefully and chose a lot of students who are fresh to the Student Government.
“You can only do so much as one person,” he said. “But, the group around you makes a lot of difference.”
Mills said he sent out a Listserv and e-mails to announce the position openings.
“[My current appointments] were the first people that contacted me,” he said.
The Student Senate confirmed Kelsey Whitehouse to the cabinet position of director of community service during Wednesday’s meeting.
Whitehouse, a freshman in chemistry, said while she wants to maintain standard community service events such as Night Walk, canned food drives and blood drives, she also wants to work on getting more students involved in community service.
“I want to focus more on creating new events that maybe different groups of students that aren’t involved in Student Government could do,” she said.
Whitehouse said she plans to attend various fraternity and sorority community service functions to gather project ideas.
“[I want to] use [those projects] to make our campus better and the whole community of Raleigh a better place for everyone,” Whitehouse said.
According to Whitehouse, although N.C. State is “pretty clean,” the city of Raleigh could use a bit of cleaning service.
“So that we’re living in a nicer community [overall],” she said.
Whitehouse said she wants to increase participation in community service through more advertisements. She said she plans to take advantage of chalking, sandwich boards, fliers and e-mails to help more students become involved.
“Really just trying to get out to the student body that community service is only going to make it better for everyone,” she said.
The Student Senate also confirmed Seth Palmer as associate director of government relations during the meeting.
Palmer, a junior in political science, said his main goal throughout his upcoming term will be tax-free textbooks.
“[I want to] try to make textbooks tax-free and work with the legislation to try to advocate a lot for that,” he said.
According to Palmer, coordinated involvement from the Student Government and the Association of Student Governments along with the state legislature is necessary to make this dream a reality.
“Just our voice at NCSU is probably not going to sway the whole legislation,” Palmer said.
Palmer said he has faith in the cabinet members the Student Government has appointed so far. However, he said the cabinet would be more complete with the presence of Kate Luckadoo as chief of staff and Josh Weeks as director of government relations.
As of Wednesday’s meeting, the Student Senate referred Luckadoo and Weeks’ cabinet appointments to the committee on appointments for further review.
“They are the best qualified for the job,” Palmer said.
Mills said he hopes his cabinet will be completed soon. He said he’s ready to take the members to his beach house this summer to “try to do a little bonding experience.” “Hopefully, we can get them all appointed and then we can all start working for the students,” he said.
