As part of its new “real deal” campaign, the College of Management is hosting a field day today at the field by the Fox Science Teaching Laboratory.
Events will include sumo wrestling, jousting, an obstacle course, a basketball shoot and a golf driving challenge.
The “real deal” campaign is part of the COM’s goal to emphasize the college’s focus on enabling students to gain real-world experience, according to the COM Web site.
“It’s basically to help the college roll out its new campaign,” Ben Barilich, a senior in business management, said. “We’re really trying to raise awareness about it.”
According to Peyton Holland, a junior in business management, a lot of people may be confused as to what the college has to offer.
“We’re really taking a strong stance about who we are and how we’re moving up the national rankings,” Holland said. “The school is giving them real-world ideas of what’s going on in the workplace.”
Holland’s marketing class is an example of the real-world experience. The class is in charge of putting together the “real deal” event.
“We’ve taken it on as a marketing campaign for the college,” Holland said. “We’ve been given a real scenario and we’ll get evaluated on that scenario.”
To Matt Williams, a senior in business management, the event is about showcasing the college’s unity.
“Important because the college is still relatively new — about 15 years old — so it’s important to get students involved,” Williams said. “Research showed that the college didn’t have a sense of unity, so we’re trying to fix that.”
According to Williams, the “real deal” campaign is important in showing how work in college will help students in their careers.
“Most classes have projects that correlate with real-world experience,” he said. “The professors have had or are having that experience, and they prepare the students for real-world work.”
