The Student Senate will decide the fate of two members of Student Body President Bobby Mills’ cabinet recommendations tonight.
After the committee on appointments came to a stand still with a tie vote for the recommendations of former student body president candidates Kate Luckadoo, a junior in anthropology and communication, and Josh Weeks, a junior in mechanical engineering, the two will have a chance to speak out.
Mills, a junior in political science, said the committee originally voted against Luckadoo and Weeks’ appointments. However, he said that was before the committee realized the tie-breaking vote, Tracy Hutcherson is a proxy and, therefore, his vote does not count.
“It’s not unfavorable,” Mills said. “But, it’s not favorable.” Greg Doucette, the Student Senate president, said the committee has to recommend whether Mills’ appointments can be fast-tracked.
“If they don’t recommend fast-track, then they can’t confirm them [tonight at the Senate meeting],” Doucette, a junior in computer science, said.
Luckadoo said most of the other cabinet appointments were recommended. She said the next step is to speak to the Student Senate tonight.
“We have to go to the Senate meeting to go through the process with them of explaining our stance on our positions,” she said.
According to Weeks, a junior in mechanical engineering, the Senate will be able to either vote or send his appointment back to the committee for review at the meeting.
“I basically have a minute to speak with the senators and kind of plead my case and explain why I want the position and what I plan to do with it,” he said.
Weeks said the committee’s recommendation is not final, and his appointment will most likely be sent back to committee at the conclusion of tonight’s meeting.
He said he had a good idea of why the committee didn’t vote to recommend his appointment like it did for most of the others.
“I think that another person with more legislative experience will be more qualified,” Weeks said.
Luckadoo also said she was pretty sure she knew why the committee did not recommend her and Weeks.
“I think the large portion was that we have not been in Student Government before, and they were worried about our qualifications,” she said.
According to Weeks, if his appointment is still rejected, he plans to find another way to stay involved in Student Government.
“But, I don’t know what that would be,” he said.
Mills said although only the people he specifically appointed were considered in the committee meeting, he did send out a Listserv announcing the positions to outside students.
He added that he chose to appoint people he knew well and trusted.
“[For example], the chief of staff is someone I work closely with and I felt that was someone I needed to trust,” Mills said.
Mills said another Senate meeting is tentatively scheduled for Friday.
“Hopefully, everything will work out and Friday everyone will be appointed,” he said.
