The Journal Reporter in Winston-Salem, N.C., reported Thursday that former LSU defensive end Tim Washington is in the process of transferring to Appalachian State University.
“I wanted to be in a different environment, and I wanted a chance to showcase my abilities,” Washington told the Journal Reporter.
Washington played in five games this past season as a redshirt sophomore and totaled three tackles. He recorded a sack and six tackles as a redshirt freshman in 2005.
LSU Sports Information Director Michael Bonnette told The Daily Reveille on Thursday night that he did not know of Washington’s decision to transfer. He said Washington had not been with the team during the spring semester.
“He never came back after the first semester, so I don’t know his whereabouts at all,” Bonnette said.
Bonnette said Washington was with the team in the Tigers’ Sugar Bowl victory Jan. 3 against the University of Notre Dame.
NCAA rules allow players who transfer to a Division I-AA school to play the following season without losing a year of eligibility or sitting out a season.
“I wanted to go to the best Division I-AA school I could get to,” Washington told the Journal Reporter. “I didn’t want to go to a mediocre program, and I wanted to go somewhere where I could contribute. Hopefully, my part will benefit the team.”
Washington said he considered schools in Alabama and Texas before a visit to Appalachian State this past weekend cemented his decision.
