Student Government officials are preparing to spend their summers focused on campaign goals and administrative meetings, they said.
Bobby Mills, student body president, said because he will be in Raleigh all summer, he plans to take advantage of this on-campus time through meetings with the administration. He said he plans to use these meetings to discuss his platform goals for the University.
According to Mills, a junior in political science, his focus this summer will be implementing debit cards on campus.
“That’s something that a lot of people are still passionate about,” he said.
Mills said he also wants to work on organizing a “midnight madness” basketball game, as well as extending dining hall hours. He said he is considering extending dining an hour using a “fast-track” system where the food options will be limited during the extra hour, something previous Student Body President Will Quick was working on.
“I want to do stuff that helps students,” Mills said.
According to Mills, he will work with most of his cabinet throughout the break, including the ones out of town.
“Now you can do so much over the Internet without having to be physically there,” he said.
Greg Doucette, the Student Senate president, said he will spend the majority of the summer planning for the school year.
“[We will be] kind of mapping out the entire year of what we want to accomplish,” Doucette, a junior in computer science, said.
According to Doucette, all Student Government officials will attend a retreat during the summer to learn how to advocate for students, write legislation properly and learn the overall organization of the University.
Doucette said his office will be focusing on tuition and fees most of the summer. He explained that he wants to try to get the Board of Trustees meeting on tuition and fees pushed back a month, so he will have more time to go over things, another project Quick started before the end of his term.
“We’ve got to make sure that the tuition and fees process is completely ready to go [by the fall],” he said.
Doucette said he plans to mainly work with his staff members who are in town. However, he said he will also communicate with his out-of-town staff members through e-mail.
According to Doucette, he plans to count on his executive office of the Student Senate president staff to work on the Polices, Rules and Regulations policy that restricts which students can run for leadership positions, review the judicial system and review Greek life.
“They’re going to be more project-oriented people,” he said.
David Foxx, student body treasurer, said during the summer he wants to make sure that the budget is in “tip-top shape.” He said he also plans to work on the appropriations packet as much as possible.
“Hopefully, we’re going to try to put everything in place so [the packet] can be [finished] as close to fall [as possible],” Foxx, a junior in political science, said.
Foxx said he also wants to focus on academic issues such as financial education.
“Maybe we can get some things put into place, so that kids know about financial advice, know about working with Cashier’s Office,” he said.
Foxx also said he plans to collaborate with fellow Student Government officials Doucette and Mills during the planning phase of summer.
“We’re going to be brainstorming off of each other,” Foxx said.
Student Chief Justice Lock Whiteside could not be reached for comment on his summer plans.
