LSU is widely known for its student’s costumes at games. Characters such as Superman, Batman, Elvis and even a banana have been spotted throughout the student section, and now these fans have increased incentive to dress up.
Gillette Power Fusion is running a contest for college students through its Web site and a group on Facebook.com to see which college football fan has the best “game face.”
Contestants will be judged on creativity. The competition is intended to show the different ways entrants prepare themselves for a big day.
Participants are required to upload videos or pictures of themselves dressed in their favorite team’s colors to the Facebook group that automatically enters them into the contest. Spectators of ESPN’s “GameDay” can also enter at the Gillette booth, which follows the show to college campuses across the country.
The contest runs through Dec. 3, and three winners are randomly selected each week during the football season. These winners receive a prize pack that includes a football autographed by former Notre Dame and current Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn.
The grand prize winner, who is selected from all entrants, receives a trip to New York City to meet Quinn and a Gillette Game Face entertainment prize package.
Fran Landry, business freshman, was one of the many who dressed up Saturday and plans on entering the competition.
“I hadn’t heard of the contest before, but it seems like a fun idea,” he said. “I like Brady Quinn, and it would be cool to meet him.”
Landry dressed in a purple-and-gold leisure suit, a purple hat accented by leopard print and walked with a cane topped with a fake diamond. He called himself the “LSU pimp.”
Landry doesn’t usually dress up, but he chose to this week because Auburn was a big game and he already had the outfit for a Halloween party.
Landry said although the competition is a good incentive, he gets his game face on for other reasons.
“I just do it to support the team and show my school spirit,” he said.
Other students get prepared for games in different ways.
Christina Buras, management sophomore, said she spent more than half an hour fixing her hair before leaving to tailgate.
She wore a purple wig with her outfit that consisted of an LSU shirt and pants adorned with rainbows.
David Helman, mass communication freshman, has woken up at 9 a.m. every Saturday for ESPN “GameDay” since he was 11 years old.
“I always have on LSU gear for good mojo too,” he said. If LSU loses, I change gear. I wore purple for Kentucky. So from now on I’m wearing yellow until we lose again, if we lose again.”
Helman wore eye black on his face along with his yellow shirt. He said that because the game went well, he will continue to wear the eye black.
The Facebook group for the competition has more than 1,800 members, 300 photos and 15 videos of entrants.
