Plans for the Design School Halloween Bash are in the works, and for the second year in a row, they don’t include alcohol.
In accordance with the University alcohol policy and after an unsuccessful petition, the Design Council had to leave alcohol out of the bash last year.
Now, the Council is gearing up for the event and is focused on other aspects, according to Jamie Wolfe, co-events coordinator for the Design Council. The date is not yet set.
Wolfe said the theme for this year’s bash is Doctor Seuss — one that was chosen from a list of 40.
“We had a box in the Design Library,” she said. “People were allowed to submit ideas for two weeks.”
She said “party inside the human body” was the runner-up theme.
According to Wolfe, a group of about 40 students will work to prepare for the event.
She said teams will work on finding a DJ, organizing contests, selling tickets, making and selling tee shirts and providing security.
Stephanie Jansen, a sophomore in graphic design, attended the bash last year.
According to Jansen, because the party was not in a central location, attendees were spread out.
But, because Wolfe said the bash will take place in The Pit — a courtyard area outside of Kamphoefner Hall — Jansen said it will improve.
“I think it will be a lot better. A lot more intimate,” she said.
The Pit was closed last year as Kamphoefner was under construction.
Jansen said though the University prohibited alcohol, “people still had their fun beforehand.”
“You could tell some people were still drunk though even though it was not allowed,” she said.
While Jansen said she would not be opposed to a wet bash, she and her friends “can still have a good time without it.”
But, she said her opinion may change as she gets closer to 21.
Michael Laut, a senior in industrial design, went to the bash in a different era.
He said he attended when alcohol was allowed, as well as last year.
Laut said among his friends, it was “split” between people who did and did not want to drink at the event.
“I guess the main thing was clearly the people who wanted to just go for the sake of going went anyway,” he said.
Like Jansen, Laut said without drinking at the event, students who wished to do so found alternatives.
“If people wanted to drink, they probably did before [the bash],” he said.
