The green-walled dining room at the Delta Zeta sorority house was filled Monday afternoon with intermingling streams of cordial conversation and patriotic music from a red and blue CD titled “Proud to be American.”
Delta Zeta hosted the first “American Classics Dessert,” an event sponsored by Greek Affairs to celebrate Constitution Day. The event featured a Constitutional terminology puzzle and traditional American-style desserts – like ice cream and apple pie – provided by various sororities.
Angela Guillory, assistant dean of Greek Affairs and adviser to the Panhellenic Council helped to organize the event.
“Today is the Greek community’s celebration of Constitution Day,” Guillory said. “We decided that the focal points should be great American desserts and Constitutional conversation.”
Constitution Day events are linked with a 2004 federal law requiring all federally funded schools to offer “employee and student training on the U.S. Constitution” on Sept. 17.
About 30 sorority members, advisers and alumnae attended. Invitations were extended to delegates from the Panhellenic Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council and the Interfraternity Council.
University administrators also attended, including Chancellor Sean O’Keefe, Vice Chancellor Neil Mathews and Dean of Students K.C. White.
“This is a chance to recognize why communications and open dialogue are so important,” O’Keefe said.
