After three running backs were selected ahead of former LSU standout Joseph Addai, who was drafted No. 30 by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2006 NFL Draft, the league announced Addai has been named one of five finalists for the 2006 NFL Rookie of the Year honor.
Other finalists include Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young, New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush, Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew, and Chicago Bears return specialist Devin Hester.
Charged with replacing four-time Pro Bowl selection Edgerrin James, who signed with the Arizona Cardinals as a free agent, Addai led all rookies with 1,081 rushing yards this season. He contributed seven rushing touchdowns, one more than James scored as a Cardinal.
Addai added 40 receptions for 325 yards and a score as quarterback Peyton Manning’s safety valve in the No. 2 passing attack in the NFL, behind quarterback Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints.
The Houston native finished his LSU career No. 5 in school history with 2,577 yards. He scored 18 rushing touchdowns in a crowded LSU backfield.
