The Detroit Tigers selected LSU junior pitcher Charlie Furbush Thursday with the No. 151 pick (4th round) on the first day of the MLB First-Year Player Draft. The lefty recorded a 3-9 record with a 4.95 ERA and 88 strikeouts a year after transferring from Saint Joseph’s College in Maine. Furbush continued LSU’s success of sending players in the first five rounds of the draft, with LSU having a least one player selected in 20 of the past 25 years. LSU and coach Paul Mainieri could also see members of this year’s recruiting class bolt early to the professional ranks. Middle infielder Drew Cumberland was selected by the San Diego Padres with the No. 46 overall selection. Chad Jones, who has also signed a letter of intent to play football in the fall for the Tigers, was drafted in the 13th round by the Houston Astros. The outfielder recorded 138 tackles and 12 interceptions in his senior year at Southern Lab High School in Baton Rouge after transferring from St. Augustine High School in New Orleans because of Hurricane Katrina. Anthony Ranaudo was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 11th round. Rules say that all baseball prospects must sign a professional baseball contract by Aug. 15 if they decide to go to the Major Leagues. Further information will be published in Tuesday’s edition of The Daily Reveille.
