A package containing nitric acid was delivered to Sturgis Hall on Tuesday afternoon and caused a fire in the building.
LSUPD spokesperson Maj. Lawrence Rabalais said an unidentified woman smelled a strange odor coming from the package around 3:30 p.m.
“As she arrived by the package, it burst into flames,” Rabalais said. “We’re thinking that one of the bottles [of nitric acid] must have been broken, and when it contacted the cardboard or the wood or something, it combusted.”
Rabalais said the fire was put out immediately by the building’s sprinkler system, and the building was evacuated.
Two people were transported to a local hospital with complaints of irritated throats, Rabalais said.
