LSU senior tennis player Michael Venus has earned Southeastern Conference Player of the Year honors, the league office announced Thursday.
Venus is ranked No. 7 in the nation in singles with a 23-8 overall record this season.
“When you consider the strength of the conference and other individuals who were up for the award, it is quite an honor,” LSU men’s tennis coach Jeff Brown said in a news release. “Michael has done so much for this team. His incredible work ethic he brings into the matches allows for his accomplishments in both singles and doubles.”
Venus is also ranked No. 2 in the country in doubles with freshman partner Neal Skupski. Skupski earned Second-Team All-SEC honors Thursday and was one of six players named to the All-Freshman Team.
Venus and Skupski have a 13-7 record on the season, and the duo will compete in the NCAA Doubles Championships as the No. 3 seed beginning May 20.
Venus will also be the No. 7 seed in the NCAA Singles Championships, which begin after the NCAA team championships.
LSU will host its NCAA Regional tournament and square off against Rice in its next match May 8.
