Every day, University student organizations fill Free Speech Alley, waving colorful flyers in an attempt to attract passers-by with information about their organization. But Wednesday afternoon, it was music in Free Speech Plaza that attracted students to Student Government’s “Straight Talk” event.Students voiced their concerns to several SG leaders and danced to music performed by the live band, Leroy Thomas and Zydeco Road Runners, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.”It’s a nice and beautiful day for the students to enjoy this music,” said Colorado Robertson, SG president.Besides enjoying the entertainment, the majority of students who stopped to talk with SG officials were concerned about the cancellation of spring break, which was an April Fool’s Day joke displayed in Tiger Weekly, Robertson said.Robertson talked with students about the upcoming budget cuts and the realignment of several academic colleges and programs.Other SG officials gave away free rain ponchos, scantrons and green books — an environmentally-friendly version of blue books — to students.Another “Straight Talk” is in the works after spring break, but because of scheduling conflicts, no specific date has been set.A Cajun band will perform at the next “Straight Talk,” for which the theme is Southwestern Louisiana.”We want to celebrate the Louisiana culture for all students on campus,” Robertson said.Because this semester is Robertson’s last as SG president, he said talking to students is his most important responsibility as a SG president. “We want to continue the ‘Straight Talk’ events this year for the students,” Robertson said. “Our motto is to come in talking and leave out talking to students.”——Contact Kimberly Brown at [email protected]
