Ole Miss played its first football game in 1893 with Dr. A.L. Bondurant as its head coach against Southwest Baptist University, according to the ole Miss media guide. It won that game 56-0.The university picked the “Crimson of Harvard and the navy blue of Yale” as its colors because Bondurant saw them as harmonious and it would be good to have the spirit of both colleges.The mascot and nickname didn’t come until 1936 when the Daily Mississippian, the student newspaper held a contest to name the team. Judge Ben Guider of Vicksburg submitted the nickname of Rebels. It was one of five options sent to 42 newsmen. twenty-one respond and 18 of them selected Rebels, and it was made official by the university athletic committee.The rebels play their home games at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/Hollingsworth Field. They are 233-76-8 on the field. and the stadium holds 60,580.The Rebels have 32 bowl appearances with 20 wins. Ole Miss one SEC titles in 1947, 1954, 1955, 1960, 1962, and 1963. The 1962 Squad (10-0) was the only squad in school history to finish with a perfect record.
