It’s no secret that Baton Rouge has a traffic problem. However, the solution may not be more highway lanes.
Perhaps the solution is a different type of transportation.
Bike Baton Rouge is a bicycling advocacy group that says biking in the city is actually becoming a safer alternative for citizens.
Doug Moore with Bike Baton Rouge says that new city infrastructure is making it safer for those who want to bike.
“That’s really the best thing that a city can do to make riding a bike safer,” Moore says.
Laurence Lambert plans the city’s transportation systems with Vectura Consulting Services. Lambert is certain that bike safety in Baton Rouge will only improve.
“There’s definitely more plans to have exclusive bike lanes or protected bike lanes, and certainly we’ve seen more of those Share-O symbols which is a communication to drivers saying share the road and expect bikes,” Lambert says.
For LSU students who would like to try biking, the UREC provides free bike rentals for 24 hours.
