The Lady Tigers opened up conference play at home on Friday, but they were unfortunately matched up against the No. 1 ranked Florida Gators.
The Lady Tigers were only able to come away with one set throughout the entire match that ended 7-0 in Florida’s favor.
Sophomore Jessica Golovin was able to take the second set in her match against No. 24 Anna Danilina. LSU struggled in all five singles matches, which featured five nationally-ranked opponents from Florida.
“Even though we lost today, we can take confidence in the fact that we just played the best team in the country,” said co-head coach Julia Sell in a press release. “This is as good as it gets, and it only gets easier from here. If we just make a few adjustments for ourselves, we’re going to be successful as the season continues.”
It was the Lady Tigers (7-3) second straight loss after falling to Tulane on Feb. 22. LSU’s schedule won’t get any easier going forward, as the Lady Tigers take on the No. 19 South Carolina Gamecocks, Sunday at 11 a.m.
For the Tigers, who earned their second win on the season Tuesday, traveled to Columbia on Friday to take on the No. 19 South Carolina Gamecocks.
The Tigers were able to snatch a point in doubles play behind seniors Jordan Daigle and Julian Saborio leading the way on court one.
Daigle and fellow senior Justin Butsch were able to win their singles matches on courts one and two, but that was not enough for victory.
Daigle defeated No. 43 Gabriel Friedrich 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Butsch defeated Harrison O’Keefe 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.
South Carolina would win the other four singles matches earning the victory.
“Today’s match was a tough one to lose because we defeated some of their better points,” coach Jeff Brown said in a press release. “We needed one more player to step up, but we are improving and getting closer to a complete match from top to bottom.”
The Tigers will stay on the road and head to Gainesville on Sunday to take on the No. 13 Florida Gators. The match will be the second time this season the teams have met. The first match resulted in a 4-0 victory for the Gators on Jan. 29.
