Recently the number of gas pump frauds has risen in Louisiana.
The Commissioner of the Louisiana Department Agriculture and Forestry Mike
Strain says the rise in gas pump fraud is due to advancements in technology.
Scammers are now inserting bluetooth devices into card scanners. The Bluetooth device makes it easier for scammers to access your wallet, because
now they don’t even have to leave home.
The scammers can hold up to thousands of debit and credit card numbers at a time, giving the scammer an array of options.
LSU student Kayla Berniard says the new rise in gas pump fraud makes
her hesitant to pay at gas pumps.
“It makes me want to go inside and pay at the cash register,” Berniard said.
There are precautions you can take to avoid losing money. You can avoid using your debit card and only pump gas using credit. That way scammers can’t get a hold of your pin. You can use the pumps closest to the convenience store. Those pumps are the least likely to be targeted by scammers.
