In what may be the biggest moment of the season for LSU, junior catcher Michael Papierski drilled a two-run home run to right field in the seventh inning.
Prior to the game, Papierski had a .230 batting average on the season.
Tonight, that did not matter. His homer gave the Tigers the two-run lead they needed to win the game, and came directly after Auburn tied the game in the top of the seventh at three runs all.
Papierski joined freshman outfielder Zach Watson as the other Tiger to hit a two-run home run. The duo combined for four of LSU’s seven hits on the hit and four of the five runs scored.
On the night of his graduation, senior pitcher Jared Poche was solid for the Tigers, and kept Auburn of the scoreboard until the sixth inning. Poche, who did not earn the win, gave up six hits and one earned run through 6 ⅔ innings.
Freshman reliever Zach Hess earned the win and senior Hunter Newman earned the save in LSU 5-3 victory over Auburn.
With the series clinched, freshman Eric Walker is expected to take the mound for LSU in game three, which is scheduled to start at noon Saturday.
