LSU Baseball swept the weekend series against Maryland on Mardi Gras weekend at the Box.
The bats came alive and pitching was lethal for the Tigers. Freshman first baseman Jake Slaughter hit in all three games and has hit in all eight of LSU’s games this season. Senior pitcher Jared Poche’ flirted with a no-hitter. Finally, junior right fielder Greg Deichmann hit his fourth home run of the season.
Here’s how the action went by the day:
The Friday game saw two strong pitchers in LSU junior Alex Lange and Maryland junior Brian Shaffer duke it out for a couple of innings before LSU scored three runs in the third inning. The victory was not in hand for the tigers until junior catcher Michael Papierski hit a three-run home run to extend the lead and the Tigers took the first game 6-1.
Saturday’s game was the best performance by the Tigers so far this season.
LSU scored 14 runs on 18 hits and every starter reached base. LSU So. center fielder Antoine Duplantis hit 3 for 3 with 1 RBI and 3 runs. Also, Slaughter went 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs and one run.
However, it was Poche’ who stole the show. Coming off of a 7 inning no-hitter in his first start, Poche’ held a no hitter through 8 innings against Maryland before finally allowing a hit in the ninth inning. Regardless, 8 innings, 6 strikeouts, and one hit allowed is an excellent day on the mound.
The Tigers took game two, 14-0 and secured the series victory.
Day three posed some challenges for LSU as they found themselves down 3-0 at the end of the first inning. However, by the end of the fourth inning, the Tigers boasted a 9-3 lead.
LSU junior relief pitcher Doug Norman injured himself pitching in the seventh inning. LSU Head Coach Paul Mainieri said he did not have a report on his status yet but hopes for the best.
The rest of the Tigers bullpen pitched well and the Tigers saw out a 9-5 victory and secure the series sweep over the Terrapins.
LSU scored 29 runs on 37 hits versus Maryland over the weekend and LSU’s two aces were dominant on the mound. Overall, this was a satisfactory weekend for LSU.
These three losses brings Maryland to 1-5 on the season with their only win being against Alabama State.
The Terrapins will travel home to face James Madison at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium on Wednesday. Then, they will travel to Cary, North Carolina to compette in the USA Baseball-Irish Classic.
LSU improves to 7-1 on the season and will host the Nicholls State Colonels on Tuesday. Freshman pitcher Zack Hess has been named the starter.
Following Tuesday, the Tigers will have a break until the weekend, when they travel to Houston to play in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic. The event is hosted at Minute Maid Park in Houston, home of the Astros.
The Tigers will play #1 TCU on Friday at 7 p.m., Baylor on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., and Texas Tech on Sunday at 10 a.m.
