Freshman guard Tremont Waters continued to shine for LSU, scoring 39 points, but it wasn’t enough as LSU fell to Marquette 94-84 for the third place spot in the Maui Invitational.
Waters 39 points came on 13-of-22 shooting, hitting five from downtown and adding eight free throws. His 39 points are the most from an LSU player at the Maui Invitational.
The Tigers started hot from the floor shooting 5-for-6, turning around any shooting struggles from the team’s performance against Notre Dame.
However, Marquette led LSU early in the first half, starting off 8-of-8 and building as much as a 13 point lead. The Golden Eagles shot 57.8 percent from the field.
LSU struggled defending Marquette from the 3-point range as the Golden Eagles made 11-of-24 shots from deep.
The Tigers clawed their way back towards the end of the half on a 8-0 run behind Waters. At one point, Waters scored 20 of LSU’s 24 points. Waters finished the half with 22 points, as the Tigers trailed by just two during halftime.
LSU pulled within one at the start of the second half, but Marquette slowly built a lead until a 12-0 run with about six minutes remaining in the game.
Waters built some tempo for the Tigers after falling behind 75-61. He drew a foul on a 3-point shot and nailed the first two free throws. After missing the third free throw, he rebounded that shot to draw another foul.
LSU was within seven points with two minutes remaining, but the Tigers couldn’t capitalize. Sophomore guard Skylar Mays missed a crucial three point shot and was called for two fouls.
LSU will be without junior guard Brandon Sampson for 3-4 weeks due to an ankle injury, but transfer Randy Onwuasor stepped in Wednesday night to replace the team’s No. 2 scorer. He scored 13 points for the Tigers, shooting 5-of-11.
