LSU coach Ed Orgeron knew that his LSU football team needed to stop Auburn’s Kerryon Johnson to be successful. But stopping Johnson wasn’t that easy for the Tigers in white and gold.
Johnson and a No. 10 Auburn team put 23 points on the board in the first half against LSU.
Johnson ran for 125 yards on 21 carries in the first half. The orange and navy blue Tigers had 290 yard of total offense in the half compared to LSU’s 236.
The last time Auburn won in Tiger Stadium was in 1999. In that game, Auburn defeated LSU 41-7.
Auburn’s up-tempo offense scored on the first drive of the game on a 46-yard field goal.
During LSU’s first offensive drive, senior quarterback Danny Etling completed a pass to senior receiver DJ Chark, but Chark wasn’t able to hold on and fumbled at the 48-yard line.
A costly mistake by Chark resulted in a touchdown by Auburn giving the visiting team an early 10-0 lead. On the drive, Auburn’s Will Hastings got behind freshman safety Grant Delpit for the easy touchdown.
An Auburn screen pass put the Tigers in scoring position and Johnson took advantage from four yards out to score his first touchdown of the game.
At the beginning of the 2nd quarter, LSU’s defense forced Auburn to settle with a 48-yard field goal attempt that put Auburn up 20-0.
Things were looking ugly in Tiger Stadium.
Then senior receiver Russell Gage turned the heat up for a struggling LSU offense. Gage broke through Auburn’s defense for a 70-yard run on the jet sweep.
On 4th and goal, sophomore receiver Stephen Sullivan scored on the jet sweep to cut Auburn’s lead 20-7.
LSU made a late offensive push in the half that set up a 14-yard touchdown pass from Etling to Gage.
Etling went 8-for-12 in the half with 122 yards. Gage rushed for 71 yards.
