The University may have a new Mike the Tiger arriving this month, according to a news release.
Veterinarian David Baker identified a tiger at a rescue facility in Florida that could become Mike VII. The 160-pound tiger is 9 months old with Siberian and Bengal characteristics, the release said.
The University is planning to transport the tiger once the renovations to the tiger habitat are complete, around mid-August. However, an exact date of arrival or introduction to the University community depends on several factors, such as the construction, travel arrangements and acclimation period, according to the statement.
Upon arrival, the tiger will be quarantined for a week in his night house as an acclimation period and will not be visible to the public during this time.
“If the quarantine/acclimation period goes well, the tiger will be released into his yard, at which time he will be declared Mike VII,” the release said. “LSU will announce in advance the day and time that the tiger will be out in his yard for the first time.”
The tiger will be donated to the University from a sanctuary known as “Wild at Heart Wildlife Center,” formerly “Animal Adventures” in Okeechobee, Florida.
The University is currently pursuing accredited sanctuary status.
