LSU’s men’s and women’s tennis teams will be traveling on the road this weekend.
The men’s team will be headed to Gainesville, Florida, and the women’s team will head to Charlottesville, Virginia.
After a dropping their first match of the season versus Memphis, the men’s team will look to rebound against no. 24 ranked University of South Florida on Saturday. Following their game against USF, the men’s team will play either Florida or UNC Wilmington.
Coach Jeff Brown took a positive outlook towards the defeat pointing out how close the matches were, but also stated that he wanted to see his team work on the small details that decide close matches.
“Being unable to get the doubles point after having served for it put us a little behind as we moved to singles,” Brown said in a press release. “However, we have a lot to take away from these matches as they were very close on both the singles and the doubles courts.”
“We have to take a look at the smallest details to improve our game and look forward to getting back out to practice on Tuesday in order to build off of this prior to competing in the ITA Kick Off next week.”
The 6-1 defeat versus Memphis was headlined by senior Jordan Daigle, as he was the only Tiger to come away with a win in the tournament. Daigle defeated Ryan Peniston, who is ranked as the 35th best men’s collegiate tennis player.
LSU will look towards Daigle, sophomore Nikola Samardzic and junior Gabor Csonka against USF.
On the contrary, the no. 19 ranked women’s team will look to continue to build on their strong start to the season after sweeping both Northwestern St. and Southern 7-0 last weekend.
The Lady Tigers will open up this weekend with Wake Forest on Saturday, and follow up against Ole Miss or Virginia.
Following their victories co-head coach Julia Sell was impressed with her team’s display.
“I thought it was a really solid start top to bottom,” Sell said in a press release. “Everybody looked really fit and decisive in all their play. This is a great starting point for the season.”
Freshman Jade Lewis, who made her debut versus Northwestern St. and also competed versus Southern, won both of her singles matches and both of her doubles matches last weekend.
With the new addition of Lewis and the no. 27 ranked doubles pair of senior Joana Valle Costa and junior Ryann Foster, the women’s team again looks to sweep this weekend’s competition in Virginia.
