When asked what the greatest thing that divides athletes from Olympians, sophomore diver Lizzie Cui responded without hesitation.
“It’s the determination,” Cui said. “Everybody has what it takes, it’s just the sacrifices you’re willing to give up and the hours that you’re willing to put in and train every single day to get better.”
Although getting to a high level of any competition requires giving up some time with friends or family, Cui doesn’t view that as a sacrifice.
“I love the sport so much…it is just part of my routine and what I have to do,” Cui said.
Her dedication has paid off. Cui qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro as the first diver to represent New Zealand since the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. She is also the second diver in LSU history to compete in the Olympics.
Cui’s coach, Doug Shaffer, said he is proud of her for achieving something she has dreamed of and working for, for many years.
Cuie and the rest of the swimming and diving team host their next meet Friday, January 27 at 5 pm in the LSU Natatorium against Houston, Rice, and Tulane.
