LSU coach Ed Orgeron has seen a shakeup on his staff on Wednesday.
Both general manager Austin Thomas and offensive line coach Jeff Grimes left for other jobs.
Thomas returned to his home state of Tennessee to join recently-named coach Jeremy Pruitt’s staff in the same role with the Volunteers, and Grimes took the offensive coordinator position at BYU, FootballScoop.com first reported Wednesday night.
Thomas joined LSU’s staff in 2013 as a member of football operations and did not serve as an on the field coach. In Nov. 2016, Thomas was promoted to general manager of LSU’s football, one of the first positions of its kind in college football.
According to to his bio on lsusports.net, Thomas’ role involved oversight and management of the entire LSU Football program and working with NFL personnel on behalf of players.
He also played a key role in recruiting for LSU, and was a primary recruiter for Tennessee natives Jacoby Stevens and Jacob Phillips.
Grimes joined LSU in 2014, creating one of the top units in the Southeastern Conference during his time with the Tigers.
He has coached multiple NFL draft choices such as Jerald Hawkins, Vadal Alexander and Ethan Pocic. This season, redshirt junior Will Clapp was named a Rimington Award finalist.
Grimes is being replaced by Los Angeles Chargers assistant offensive line coach James Cregg, as reported by Bruce Feldman via Twitter. The 44-year-old Cregg previously served as an assistant at Tennessee, USC and the Denver Broncos.
The loss of Thomas and Grimes is not expected to have much of an impact on the Tigers’ upcoming recruiting class.
