DELORES HURST, Reveille Radio News Reporter:
Elections are only a day away and some students are getting prepared. LSU senior Sharletta Tennie is one of those students.
SHARLETTA TENNIE (University senior): I’ll actually have to go home Tuesday and vote.
HURST : So far, over 33 thousand people have voted in this election, with about 12 thousand being from Baton Rouge. According to WAFB, more Democrats voted early, but from online polls, there is more support for the Republican candidates like the Senatorial race between David Vitter and Charlie Melancon. Tennie sees this trend.
TENNIE: I think that Vitter will win because I was looking at some of the projections and stuff online and I actually think that Vitter will win just because he’s been in office before.
HURST: Student Nikita Ginns doesn’t agree.
NIKITA GINNS (University student): I think Melancon will win the election because people are really looking for change.
HURST: Although elections are coming fast, there haven’t been many ads advising students to go out and vote. Both Tennie and Ginns agree.
TENNIE: I’ve never seen any of the ads telling student to go out and vote.
GINNS: No, I haven’t seen many fliers at all on campus.
HURST: Although ads aren’t too present around campus, faculty and students are urging each other to go out and vote. Ginns believes students should vote.
GINNS: It is important for students to vote because it gives each student a voice.
HURST: Tennie also believes that African American students should make their way to the poll.
TENNIE: I definitely feel that if we want to feel like we are represented in the United States then we should get out there and vote.
