LAUREN LANGLOIS, Reveille Radio News Reporter:
Student Government President J Hudson says the first time he noticed the Greek community’s desperate need for better Internet access was during his sophomore year.
J HUDSON, Student Body President: I lived in my fraternity house my sophomore and junior year, so I experienced those same problems.
LANGLOIS: Traditionally, Cox Communications provides the Greeks with Internet through private contracts, a setup that is unreliable.
HUDSON: Cox line is not strong enough to support the 70 or 80 members the fraternity house has.
LANGLOIS: But if Student Government can gather $750 thousand by February, the Greek community can have access to LSU’s Internet by the end of next semester, says Hudson.
HUDSON: You can’t use tech fee funds on specific, like, groups of individuals so, like, you can’t use it just on Greek houses.
LANGLOIS: The urgency for better Internet access is growing as the Greek population grows, which it has done by one percent each year for the last four or five years, says Hudson.
HUDSON: The more and more people that you have within each of these houses, the more problems that you have. And so these routers weren’t able to support 30 individuals, so now that this fraternity has grown to 50, it’s even worse.
