HOPE CARTER, Reveille Radio News Reporter:
Student organizations looking to use on-campus resources this semester will find some new policies in place. Paperwork, fees and the required presence of LSUPD are making student organizations have to plan events in advance. Associate Director for Campus Life Michelle Lowery Eldredge says the new policies are a result of a conversation with campus administration.
MICHELLE LOWERY ELDREDGE (Associate Director for Campus Life): Campus departments who actually either work to approve student organization events or support them met twice over the summer and one of the things we discussed was organization meetings and the events policy in general.
CARTER: Eldredge says new fundraiser fees do not benefit the University but are in effect to keep in accordance with state law.
ELDREDGE: If they are not a non-profit they do have to pay taxes to the city and the state, and so, student organizations with write a check to us with the financial statement to LSU and we’ll make sure that it gets to the city and the state.
CARTER: One of the reasons organizations need to schedule earlier is because police are required to be at more events.
ELDREDGE: If security is needed or required by Campus Life or the venue, the location for the event, we’ve got to have that 10 days in advance so that we can get those officers scheduled.
CARTER: Eldredge said the policies are not necessarily new, they simply have not been followed or made known.
ELDREDGE: These things have all existed, it’s just we’re trying to make sure organizations are aware of it, and not everyone is because officers change sometimes once a year, sometimes once a semester.
