As of August 15, police statewide in Louisiana have begun enforcing a new law passed by the Louisiana State Legislature. The bill, which is an amendment to a previously passed bill from 2008, now makes texting while driving a primary offense. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drivers caught texting behind the wheel will face a fine of $175 for a first time offense and up to $500 for any that follow. The majority of students on LSU’s campus seem to be in favor of the new law. Students such as Taylor Smith, mass communications sophomore, said the law should help cut down on accidents and further ensure safety for all drivers on the road.
