The questions that have surrounded the running back position nearly all offseason long have finally been answered. Redshirt freshman Dean Haynes will start Saturday against Western Carolina, with true freshman Mustafa Greene set to back him up. Coach Tom O’Brien and the Wolfpack coaching staff provided the surprising answer to the question of who would prevail in the crowded battle for carries, and also announced the starters at every other position with the release of Monday’s depth chart. Popular speculation among many fans concluded that the top two backs leading the Pack’s ground game would be redshirt junior Curtis Underwood and sophomore James Washington. But instead, State’s offense will start true freshmen who have never logged a carry or caught a pass at the collegiate level. Haynes spent the majority his redshirt freshman season in the secondary, but he began his lightning-quick ascent to the top of the Pack’s depth chart on the offensive side of the ball. It won’t be Haynes first experience in the backfield. As a senior in high school, Haynes recorded 878 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns while playing quarterback and running back. Haynes was named offensive scout team player of the week last season in the team’s preparation during the week of the Pittsburg game. His backup, Greene, gained 1387 yards and scored 18 touchdowns during his senior year at Irmo High School in South Carolina. The rest of the projected starters and backups on offense are far less surprising. Three sophomores, in right guard Zach Allen, center Camden Wentz and left guard Andrew Wallace will start Saturday against Western, with a pair of backups at the tackle spots. Freshman Robert Crisp, a five-star prospect in high school will back up senior Jake Vermiglio at left tackle, with redshirt freshman Sam Jones backing up junior Mikel Overgaard on the right side. Defensively, the Pack will start just two underclassmen – sophomore defensive tackle Bran Slay and redshirt sophomore linebacker Terrell Manning – in the front seven. Three of the four backups in the secondary will be true freshmen, as Dontae Johnson will back up Earl Wolff at boundary safety, with David Amerson backing up C.J. Wilson at field corner and D.J. Green listed behind Brandan Bishop at field safety.
