Kary Vincent Jr. was expected to be a heavy contributor to LSU’s defense this year, for both his talent and senior leadership. But due to growing health concerns amidst this pandemic, he elected to opt out of the season and begin training for the NFL Combine.  

It’s a tough loss for the Tigers, who are looking to contend for a playoff spot this year, but it is not the end of the world. They do not lack skillful depth and have multiple players with the potential to shine in Vincent Jr.’s open position.  

Currently, all signs point to sophomore Cordale Flott, according to Coach Ed Orgeron.  

“Cordale Flott has solidified himself as a starter,” Orgeron said to WVUE New Orleans. “Either in the nickel package or base package where he can play corner.”  

Flott is yet another talented defensive back on this LSU football team. He played in 13 games last season, starting one game at the nickel versus Ole Miss, and finished with 15 tackles and four passes deflected in his time on the field.  

Other players Orgeron mentioned were Jay Ward, Eli Ricks and Dwight McGlothern.  

Orgeron had praises for each of these players, stating that Ricks was improving with every practice, and McGlothern is an “excellent tall corner” who is “like glue on the receiver.” 

This cornerback group may be incredibly young, with sophomores Flott, Ward and Derek Stingley Jr. and freshmen Ricks and McGlothern being, but they are also incredibly talented. They could each play a large role for the Tigers by the time this season is finished.  

But, it’s better safe than sorry. With LSU’s defensive back depth depleted due to Vincent Jr.’s departure and multiple hamstring injuries, the Tigers are looking to add depth in whatever way they can.  

There are still a handful of players in the transfer portal that the Tigers can pursue. One possible transfer that stands out is Trey Udoffia.  

Udoffia spent his last three years at Colorado, playing his first two years at corner and tallying two seasons with 30+ tackles. His junior season was a different story. He moved to safety, missed most the season because of personal reasons and returned only to have limited playing time.  

Even though he isn’t likely to make a huge impact according to 247sports, in terms of building depth, he would be a solid pickup.  

Losing a starter can cause a lot of problems, especially when that starter is expected to make strong contributions to the team. But with all the talent and skillful coaching the Tigers have, they will figure out the best way to handle this situation.
