Any doctor recommends a daily intake of around 2,000 calories for the average person.
But freshman quarterback Myles Brennan is no average person.
For breakfast alone, Brennan consumes around 1,300 calories in order to put on weight for the season.
“I’m on an insane meal plan,” Brennan said when he met with the media for the first time on Tuesday. “I come in early in the morning, get breakfast and then a shake, and then I’m eating probably 6-7 meals a day.”
Brennan is focused on adding another 10-15 pounds to his slim frame and says his goal is to be around 210 pounds.
Brennan has been working around the new offense being installed for the 2018 season, following the departure of offensive coordinator Matt Canada and his shift-heavy offense.
“It just takes a lot of studying, a lot of preparation, but I feel like I’m doing well,” Brennan said.
“[The offense is] not much different. As a quarterback you have to know everything. Obviously you have to know the routes, the protections, where the blitz is coming from. You just kind of have to put the old offense away and jump into this new one.”
Brennan is in the midst of a quarterback battle between himself, Lowell Narcisse and Justin McMillan.
“We’re competing everyday,” Brennan said. “We’re pushing each other as hard as we can trying to make each other better. We’re all buddies, we’re all teammates, but when we go out there and when we perform were trying to make each other better and learn from each others mistakes.”
As of now, Brennan has the upper-hand in the competition being the only one who has actually played in a game.
He is no stranger to the competition though as he was in a similar position last season with Danny Etling, fighting for that starting spot.
While Brennan was in the backup spot during 2017, he was able to take away a lot from Etling’s game, and even pregame rituals.
“We got a lot closer,” Brennan said. “One thing I admire from him was he was always trying to help me out, never got salty I was behind him. He was always there helping me learn.”
While Brennan is only a sophomore, being a leader for the offense and the team as a whole is something he’s trying to become through the course of the spring.
“I’m trying to be a leader, as well as everyone else on this team,” Brennan said. “We’re all trying to go out there and lead each other, and the rest will take care of itself.”
