Former LSU running back and the Tigers’ lone Heisman trophy winner Billy Cannon passed away early Sunday morning at the age of 80, the University announced.

Cannon led LSU to its first national championship in 1958 as a junior, finishing as a consensus All-American.

Cannon won the Heisman in 1959 after leading the Tigers to a 9-2 record that season, clinching a berth to the Sugar Bowl.  The senior ran for 598 yards and five touchdowns while leading the defense with four interceptions.

Perhaps his career defining play at LSU came when he returned a punt 89 yards against undefeated Ole Miss late in the fourth quarter, carrying the Tigers to a 7-3 victory, better known as the ‘Halloween Run’.

Cannon for his career at LSU rushed for 1,867 yards and caught for another 522 while scoring 23 total touchdowns.

Cannon would go on to be selected first overall in the 1960 AFL Draft to the Houston Oilers, where he would play for three seasons.  Before the 1964 season, Cannon was traded to the Oakland Raiders, where he played for five seasons.

Professionally, Cannon won three AFL championships and ended his professional career with 2,455 yards rushing, 3,656 yards receiving and 64 total touchdowns.
