Seeing fans tailgating is a common sight in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Except this tailgate is not for football, it is for baseball.
Loyal LSU baseball fan Floyd Campbell and his friends have been tailgating outside of Alex box stadium since 1993.
“Everybody’s welcome,” Campbell said. “It’s not an invite only. When you walk up, we tell you that we’ll cook it, but you have to serve yourself.”
Campbell is not the only person who loves watching LSU baseball. A record breaking 12,844 people came to Friday night’s season opener against Notre Dame.
The tradition of coming to the Tiger’s opening night applies to people of all ages, including 13-year-old Colin Foil, who has been attending openers since he was six years old.
“This will be my 7th opening night game in a row,” Foil said.
The support from this huge crowd motivated the Tigers, especially senior pitcher Austin Bain, who sealed LSU’s 7-6 comeback win with his strikeouts in the 9th inning.
“It was electric,” Bain said. “I had a lot of adrenaline pumping. There’s no way that I could not throw as hard as I could.”
LSU will host Notre Dame on Saturday, Feb. 17th at 4 p.m. for their second game of the series.
