LSU Opera is rehearsing for its first show of the semester– which also happens to be their first full-length piece sung entirely in Russian.
Eugene Onegin tells the story of a man living in 1820s Russia who nonchalantly rejects a girl who loves him, kills his best friend in a duel, then realizes his mistakes when it is too late.
The show will run from October 25-28, and tickets are available on the College of Music and Dramatic Arts website.
LSU Opera is one of the leading programs of its kind in the country. Two local patrons, John Turner and Jerry Fischer, recently donated $4 million to the School of Music that will be used in part to establish the Turner-Fischer Center for Opera at LSU.
But despite its prestige, the program is not well-known within the student body. Eugene Onegin music director Michael Borowitz believes that students may have an outdated view of what opera is, and encourages those who have never been to a show to “come on and witness it once in your life. You might just be surprised.”
