Devin White’s suspension for the first half of LSU’s game against Alabama stemming from a targeting penalty late in the fourth quarter against Mississippi State has caused a firestorm among LSU fans.
On Monday, an LSU fan started a GoFundMe to pay for two billboards in Birmingham, Alabama, the home of the Southeastern Conference offices.
“We’ll fund as many billboards as possible, with any excess funding going as a donation toward the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, in honor of Devin’s love of horses,” said Edward H., who started the GoFundMe.
Within a day, LSU fans raised enough money for the billboards. The billboards went up on Tuesday, and the remaining funds will be donated to LSU’s veterinarian school as mentioned. In all, the GoFundMe raised $6,235 which was well over the original goal of $4,150.
Other fan efforts have included a petition online to get White’s suspension revoked, hashtags like “#FreeDevinWhite” have trended on twitter, and there are even plans for LSU to have a white out for the Alabama game in protest of White’s suspension.
Even LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva has tried to step in on behalf of White. He made phone calls to the SEC office over the weekend about getting White’s suspension revoked.
However, Brody Miller of Nola.com tweeted White’s suspension will stand, according to LSU Senior Associate Robert Munson.
