University students gathered to see rapper Waka Flocka Flame perform at the LSU Homecoming Concert on the Parade Ground Wednesday night.
The event was organized by the Student Activities Board and Student Government. Despite being announced only a day before, the event drew a large crowd.
“I love Waka Flocka. I’m a big fan,” said finance freshman Quinton Sanders. “I think it is really cool of LSU to bring him in for homecoming week.”
There was fear the show would have to be moved to the Union Theater due to inclement weather, but the concert went on outside.
The show started with an opening act from the previous night’s talent show winners, one being science freshman Miranda Albarez. Albarez showed off her impressive baton twirling routine as the crowd began to fill up.
Many people in the crowd were doused in multiple colors after participating in the paint war on the Parade Ground, while others stayed clean and enjoyed cotton candy.
At 7 p.m., DJ CMix played some familiar tunes to get the crowd fired up, including “Mo Bamba,” “God’s Plan,” and even “Breaking Free” from High School Musical.
Although it was almost two hours after DJ CMix started, the crowd greeted Waka Flocka with large applause. Waka Flocka had cancelled an appearance at the University before, but those worries quickly disappeared as he set foot on stage. He kept it simple with a black shirt and black pair of athletic shorts.
“LSU, are you ready to turn up?” Waka Flocka said, setting the mood for the rest of the night.
He performed some of his biggest hits, including “Grove St. Party” and “Hard in Da Paint,” but to the dismay of many, he did not play his hit “No Hands.”
Some students pulled out their cell phones to capture the moment on their Snapchat stories. Others were there to just relax, with a vape pen in hand.
After Waka Flocka finished his short performance, the 2018 homecoming court was introduced on stage.
“It was awesome LSU thought to incorporate the talent show winners and homecoming court into a big event like this,” said business freshman Courtney Teas. “It was a lot of fun.”
Many students on Twitter reported seeing the rapper at Mellow Mushroom after the concert.
The concert was a success, as many excited students got to take a break from studying to jump around, listen to music and have a great time.
“I’m glad I go to a school that puts a lot of effort into events for the students,” said freshman biochemistry major Grace Stewart. “I really enjoyed the concert.”
