The Golden Band from Tigerland marched onto the Tiger Stadium field to perform their newest halftime show titled “Binge Watch,” during LSU’s game against LA Tech on Sept. 22.
The band performed the theme songs to many popular TV shows, including “The Simpsons” and “Game of Thrones,” but the rendition that resonated most was the theme song of “The Office.”
“I’m an ‘Office’ fanatic. I’ve watched the series start to finish five or six times, and when nothing’s on, it’s what I put on,” said Cody Worsham, LSU Sports digital media reporter.
Worsham quickly pulled out his phone to record the band from the press box once he heard the familiar tune and saw the band lining up to spell out “The Office” in the logo’s font. After he posted it to Twitter, the tweet quickly went viral as thousands of ‘Office’ fans began to like and retweet the 26-second clip.
“As far as prepping for the show, we went into the ‘Binge Watch’ show like we do all of our halftime shows: by paying hyper attention to making both the music and marching impeccable,” said LSU Drum Major Beau Bujol.
Notable sports page Bleacher Report tweeted it to their 6.7 million followers:
“It was pretty surreal,” Worsham said.
As the video spread on Twitter, it started to reach actors from the show, who responded positively.
“The video was getting so many hits that I had to mute notifications on my phone,” Worsham said. “I didn’t know John Krasinski had quoted the tweet until I checked his profile. I knew Angela Kinsey and Brian Baumgartner had shared it, so I started checking all the actors’ pages. His was the first one I checked, and he had posted it maybe 15 minutes before.”
Even NBC’s official Twitter account for The Office tweeted it out with a reference for fans of the show.
“After that, I turned on notifications for all the actors: Rainn Wilson, Ed Helms, Jenna Fischer and of course, Steve Carell. He doesn’t tweet much, so I thought he was the least likely to tweet it. But he did, and literally as he did it, my wife walked in the door and asked me why I was jumping up and down like a maniac,” Worsham said.
Ed Helms had a particularly emotional response:
“Almost all of us in the band have seen ‘The Office’ and know the characters well, so just seeing the actual people themselves commenting on something we did is just surreal,” said Jacob Vedros, a sophomore trumpet player.
The reception was so positive, the Golden Band from Tigerland will have an encore performance on Oct. 20 when LSU plays Mississippi State. The University has invited the entire main cast of The Office to attend.
Of course, with a great performance comes very hard work. The band practiced for two weeks leading up to the show, working Tuesday through Friday every week for an hour and a half, along with a final rehearsal on game day.
“It was difficult just because it was so much to learn and clean in a very short amount of time,” said Tyler Gremillion, a junior trombone player.
Despite all the hard work, the band had a great time putting it together.
“Playing a bunch of tunes from shows that we have watched either growing up or currently watch has been a real treat for us,” Bujol said. “That along with making sets paying tribute to these great television shows made the learning and performing of this show even more enjoyable.”
Thanks to Worsham sharing the video online, the positive response has been a huge encouragement to the band.
“Seeing all the love and support from people across the nation, especially from the actors of ‘The Office,’ has been so humbling and enjoyable,” Bujol said. “For the band, it is especially great because it shows that people are loving our shows. Our ultimate goal is to create fantastic shows to entertain fans in Death Valley and across the nation, so seeing this type of response tells us that we have been accomplishing our goal.”
As ecstatic as Worsham was for his video to go viral, he knows this was all thanks to an outstanding performance from the entire band.
“All the credit goes to the Golden Band from Tigerland,” Worsham said. “They did a phenomenal job. All I did was pull out my phone and hit record when I heard them playing the theme song. I’m glad [The Office cast] enjoyed the band’s performance, and I’m glad I was smart enough to put down the press box halftime cookies and film the best band in the country.”
