Five weeks into the season and quarterback Joe Burrow has started to develop some chemistry with his wide receiver core.
The receiver that stood out the most tonight was sophomore Justin Jefferson. He locked in his first career touchdown as a Tiger, but he still has one more goal that his quarterback is starting to make fun of.
“He had 99 yards,” Burrow said. “He can’t get a hundred. That’s kind of our running joke. He always gets 97, 99. He can’t get a hundred. He’s a go-to guy for me. He plays really well.”
“To be honest, I don’t like it,” Jefferson said. “I don’t like being short one yard. You know, we still have games to come and opportunities for me to get that 100 yards. Every Saturday morning in the summer we came to the indoor. We ran a couple of routes. Just doing that has helped us with our connection.”
“You know, Justin has been a guy that we’re really high on obviously,” head coach Ed Orgeron said. “And we knew he was going to have a breakout game. We just didn’t know when. Tonight was, and we are happy for him.”
The Tigers have continued to open up the passing threat using several different receivers every game, a trend that compliments the explosive running back committee.
“LSU used to be that running offense,” Jefferson said. “So just spreading it around is a good feeling for us, especially for the receivers.”
“We have a lot of playmakers, so when you give them open space, they can go make plays,” Burrow said. “Terrace (Marshall) had a big play in the third quarter there on a hook route, made somebody miss and went for 60 to 70 yards. When you have playmakers like that, it makes my job easy.”
The Tigers wide receiver core will have a big challenge next week against self-proclaimed “Defensive Back University” – the Florida Gators. LSU travels to Gainesville looking to remain undefeated.
