Former LSU basketball manager Sam Eaves talks about his past relationship with Wayde Sims.
Sims, a junior kinesiology major and Baton Rouge native, lost his life from a gunshot near Southern University early Friday morning.
Eaves built a relationship with Sims while working for LSU Athletics.
“So I was a manager for the basketball team Wayde’s freshman year and my freshman year for the 2016-2017 season,” Eaves said.
“I worked with all the basketball players everyday so I saw Wayde pretty much everyday.”
Eaves said that Sims always had a smile on his face and had a good time.
“It was one of the worst seasons in LSU men’s basketball history and he was always trying to be positive and trying to bring a positive spirit to the team,” Eaves said.
“It was funny, I would hold the dummy and the post guys would do their post moves and I would have the coach yelling “Hit them harder,” and Wayde was whispering at me “No please don’t hit me harder,” Eaves said.
“He would always try to dunk on me, always. Anytime I was underneath the rim Wayde was trying to raise up and throw one down on me,” Eaves said. “Luckily never happened but he tried.”
“I really can’t speak for the other teams but they all seemed to love him,” Eaves said.
Updates on the investigation are to follow once they have been released.
