Student Government Senate recently passed Cody Wells and Kathleen Bordelon’s executive charter, which details how SG will operate in the next year.
Wells and Bordelon’s executive charter differs only slightly from that of former SG President and Vice President J Hudson and Dani Borel.
Most notably, Wells’ executive charter includes a department of communication encompassing the positions of press secretary, graphic designer, website manager and public relations officer. A director of communication will oversee the positions.
“Basically the main goal for this position is to manage our office’s communication to our constituents,” Alexis Sarver, Wells’ director of communication, said in an e-mail to The Daily Reveille. “In doing this, we hope we will be able to better communicate to the students everything that we do for them.”
The charter explains which duties fall under the new department.
“Under this department shall fall all activity involving public relations, communication, media relations, and advertising,” the charter says.
Hudson’s executive charter, which did not outline a department of communication, instead detailed a department of graphic design, an information technology officer and classified press secretary as a senior staff position.
Hudson’s charter had provisions for departments of college council affairs and organizational outreach, both of which Wells eliminated. Hudson’s charter also originally included staff posting and maintaining office hours, while Wells’ has no office hour requirement.
Both Wells and Hudson’s charters say “all staff shall be required to attend one Student Senate meeting per month, where they will give a report on current projects and make themselves available for questions.”
While Hudson articulated nine initiatives under his Department of Sustainability, Wells outlined four including coordinating sustainability efforts, acting as an intermediary between the executive branch and the University’s department of sustainability, organizing the implementation of bike safety week, and maintaining and updating information on sg.lsu.edu/lsubikes.
