First Quarter
No. 1-ranked LSU continued to make a case for the the top spot in college football coming out of the gates firing on all cylinders against No. 17 Florida.
True freshman quarterback Jacoby Brissett made his first career start for the Gators in place of injured quarterbacks senior John Brantley and fellow freshman Jeff Driskel.
The Tigers forced a three-and-out on the opening possession, taking over at the 50 yard line.
On the Tigers’ second play from scrimmage, senior quarterback Jarrett Lee connected with junior wide receiver Rueben Randle on a 46 yard touchdown pass, giving LSU an early 7-0 lead just three minutes into the game.
After another Gator three-and-out, an eight play, 57 yard drive capped by a two yard run by sophomore running back Spencer Ware gave the Tigers a 14-0 lead with 6:40 left in the first quarter.
Freshman punter Brad Wing’s 44 yard fake punt touchdown run gave Tiger fans a teasing 20-0 lead, before the score was called back for taunting.
Wing turned to the trailing Gator defenders and spread his arms – an action the referees felt deserved a 15 yard penatly.
At the end of one quarter, the Tigers lead 14-0.
Second Quarter
LSU still captialized off the fake run, despite Wing’s touchdown reversal.
Three plays later, junior kicker Drew Alleman nailed a 35-yard field goal to give LSU a 17-0 lead two minutes into the second quarter.
Senior safety Brandon Taylor snagged his second interception of the season when Brissett’s wandering pass fell into Taylor’s arms.
But the Tigers couldn’t capitalize on the turnover, and were forced to punt.
Wing’s punt pinned the Gators at the two yard line, aiding in the field position battle.
The Tigers got the ball back three plays later and senior quarterback Jordan Jefferson took the field for the first time in the game.
Jefferon’s first pass of the season was completed to junior wide receiver Russell Shepard for 37 yards down to the eight yard line.
One play later, Ware scampered to the endzone for his second score of the day.
Alleman tacked on the extra point to give LSU a 24-0 lead.
The Gators would get on their first points of the day following a 14-play, 59 yard drive by Florida which ended in a 35-yard field goal by junior kicker Caleb Sturgis.
The Tigers would hold a 21 point lead going into the break, 24-3.
Third Quarter
An uneventful third quarter had some fans hitting the parking lots early.
Both offenses came out of the break looking flat, punting on each of their opening drives.
Jefferson saw his second action of the game, leading the Tigers on a 10 play, 51 yard drive that led to a 23 yard Alleman field goal to give LSU a 27-3 lead.
Florida finally showed signs of life at the quarter with a 65 yard bomb from Brissett to sophomore wide receiver Andre Debose for the Gators first touchdown of the game.
The score came with 40 seconds left in the third, cutting the lead to 27-11.
Fourth Quarter
Every the third quarter was, the fourth quarter wasn’t.
The Gators score cut the lead to two possessions.
Two plays into the ensuing drive, Lee connected with Shepard for a 57 yard bomb to put the Tigers on the two yard line.
Jefferson saw his second action of the game when he came in for the goal line situation.
Three plays later, Jefferson – doing his best Tim Tebow impersonation – completed a two yard fake-run jump touchdown pass to senior tight end Mitch Joseph.
The touchdown is the first of Joseph’s LSU career, and extended LSU’s lead to 21.
The Tigers tacked on another score with 1:27 left in the game, with sophomore running back Alfred Blue’s two yard dash, putting the nail in the Gator’s coffin.
Florida would run the rest of the clock out, finalizing the 41-11 defeat.
With the win, LSU improves to 6-0 (3-0 SEC) and Florida falls to 4-2 (2-2 SEC).
