A bill that will allow state college employees to carry weapons advanced in the house Tuesday. Full-time employees with valid permits will be allowed to bring weapons on campus with limited exceptions.
The proposed bill restricts guns at sporting events, disciplinary hearings, and hospitals. Provisions offer colleges immunity from possible legal action in the event of accidental discharge, meaning workers’ compensation would not cover harm done in an accidental fire.
Linda McFadyen-Ketchum, representative from Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, says the legislation “forces guns onto campuses where they are not wanted.”
Erin Luper, National Rifle Association lobbyist, sees citizens as “almost sitting ducks” in gun-free zones.
In addition, the Senate Judiciary Committee and House Civil Justice Committee passed a bill lowering the lifetime handgun permit fee to only $200.
